Sclerotherapy is the injection of a special solution, causing the collapse of unwanted veins. The procedure is virtually painless and considered the "gold standard" for smaller varicose and larger spider veins. and into varicose or spider veins.
Your physician will inject an FDA-approved chemical into the unwanted veins causing them to immediately shrink and dissolve naturally over time. The procedure is sometimes done with real-time ultrasound imaging and unlike Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT), Sclerotherapy closes not just the treated vein but also the veins that feed blood into the injected vein. This reduces the likelihood of the spider or varicose vein returning. Patients will generally wear compression stocking for seven days, but can usually walk and return to normal activity immediately after the procedure. The procedure may require multiple sessions depending on the number of veins being treated.
Sclerotherapy may be used for cosmetic reasons, for example if you would like to reduce the visibility of veins in your legs. The procedure is used for both spider and varicose veins, especially in cases where the patient is experiencing aching or throbbing, fatigue or restlessness, night cramps, and other symptoms because of the aforementioned diseases.
